The Sound of Music film is not saying so long or farewell to the hearts of the UK’s older generation according to new research from retirement housing provider Anchor. Report by Ellie O’Donnell

New research from Anchor reveals that the 1965 classic The Sound of Music ranks top among the silver screen favourites of the over 55s.

And old movies rated higher than newer releases with whopping 80 per cent of the top 10 family film choices pre-dating 1975.

When choosing their favourite films to watch with family, interestingly men and women differed in their choices. Men selected The Railway Children whilst women’s must-watch movie was the 2008 Abba musical Mamma Mia.

The big screen plays a significant part in the lives of the survey’s participants. Some two thirds of those who took part said they watched a film once a week, with over a quarter saying they watched with younger people.

Anchor, the UK’s largest not-for-profit housing and care provider in the UK, is hosting Sound of Music themed events at its care homes and housing developments.

Selected locations will be welcoming friends, family and members of the public to join in for a film screening of the Sound of Music, movie quiz and refreshments.

Anchor’s Chief Executive, Jane Ashcroft CBE, said: “Watching a film as a family is a wonderful way to bring together several generations. The message at the heart of The Sound of Music is the strength of family bonds and I think that is something that UK families still very much relate to today.”

Top five films for today’s over 55s:

  1. The Sound of Music (1965)
  2. The Railway Children (1970)
  3. Mamma Mia (2008)
  4. Singing in the Rain (1956)
  5. Oliver! (1968)
  6. Harry Potter (2001 – 2011)
