The BBC series, Poldark, which showcases Cornwall’s stunning scenery has been a major factor in raising its profile as a desirable place to retire.

Gillian Girling, Chief Executive of Girlings Retirement Rentals, says, “Since Poldark was first screened more people have been enquiring about our retirement rental properties in Cornwall.

“The region is very beautiful with lots of great coastal resorts and market towns that appeal to those that want to retire by the sea or to the countryside, away from the hustle and bustle.

“We are finding that more people are considering downsizing and selling their homes in the busy home counties and London and moving down to the south west for a slower pace of life.

“For those that are planning a big move to somewhere completely new, renting also gives them the opportunity to test the water first and make sure they like the area.

“Many people are choosing to rent in a specialist purpose-built retirement development, instead of buying, and enjoying retirement living without the worry of on going maintenance or payment of service charges.

“Most of our properties come with assured tenancies so people can stay as long as they wish – offering people similar security to home ownership.”

According to information from the Office of National Statistics[, some 30 per cent of Cornwall’s population is over 65 years old, compared to 18 per cent nationally.

Girlings currently has properties available in Cornwall for those over 55 years old. The first is Robartes Court– a two bedroom cottage in Truro available on an assured shorthold tenancy from £795 a month.

This cottage is in a wonderful quiet residential location, just 500 metres from the shopping centre and close to the amenities of Truro city centre.

It also has a one bedroom second floor apartment available in Trafalgar Court in Penzance available on an assured tenancy for £775 a month.

The development has a residents’ lounge as well as a library/games room. It is close to local amenities including the train station and overlooks the sea to St Michael’s Mount.

Girlings also has properties in Bodmin, Falmouth and Newquay which are currently all let on long -term tenancies.

All rents include service charges and property maintenance, plus the developments have a resident’s lounge and communal gardens, 24-hour emergency call system in each apartment and a development manager.
