Taken from the late Queen Mother’s maiden name – Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon – the development will be called Bowes Lyon Court and built on the town’s Queen Mother Square.

Bowes Lyon Court, which has a distinctive royal flavour but you don’t need to be royal to live there, will comprise 62 one-and-two-bedroom apartments designed specifically for the over 70s and is due for completion in the autumn, with first apartments available for reservation now.

Construction of Poundbury began in 1993 and has been built on the principles of traditional architecture and urban planning as advocated by HRH The Prince of Wales, and delivered by the Duchy of Cornwall. Poundbury Phase 2 (59) - Copyright Duchy of Cornwall

The town which is home to 2,500 gives priority to people, rather than cars with a mix of commercial buildings and residential areas, shops and leisure facilities to create a pedestrianised community.

Bowes Lyon Court is part of McCarthy & Stone’s new Platinum collection of developments and will provide superior-quality living space and high-spec fixtures and fittings.

Facilities will include 25,000ft of communal areas including a shared homeowner’s lounge, as well as an on-site table-service restaurant and guest suite for when family and friends want to come and stay.

There will also be a dedicated Estates Manager and flexible and on-site care and support team, offering domestic and personalised care packages, which can be tailored to homeowner’s individual needs. There will be staff on site 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Clive Fenton, Chief Executive Officer for McCarthy and Stone, said: “It is a great privilege to be entrusted by the Duchy of Cornwall to develop this prestigious site. The development has the potential to provide a real boost to Poundbury. Chris Vile Architecture (67)- Copyright Duchy of Cornwall

“There is a clear need for this form of housing with many retirees living in large or under-occupied homes, wanting to downsize but struggling to find appropriate housing. By providing this, we can stimulate the housing chain for buyers of all ages and requirements.”

Simon Conibear, an estate director for the Duchy of Cornwall said: “The Duchy is delighted to welcome McCarthy and Stone to Poundbury.

“We have been particularly impressed by its development in nearby Weymouth and are looking forward to watching this flagship building take shape in the Queen Mother Square, the central hub and heart of Poundbury.”
