BBC’s drama Poldark is back for a fifth and final series shining the spotlight on Cornwall where the programme is filmed

Visit Cornwall found that 13% of visitors cited the BBC programme as the key reason for coming to the region.

But it is now also proving a magnet for retirees. According to the latest report from Cornwall Council a third of the region’s population is due to be aged 65 or over by 2036, and this year the Cornish town of Falmouth was named as one of the top five best places to live in the whole South West by the Sunday Times.

The ‘Poldark effect’ has prompted a rise in enquiries for retirement rentals since it first aired in 2015, according to Jamie Turnbull, Business Director of Girlings Retirement Rentals, who expects the next few weeks to be busy again.

Jamie says, “We’ve noticed an increase in people enquiring about our retirement rental properties in Cornwall since the series began.

“The region is very beautiful with lots of great coastal resorts and market towns that appeal to people who want to retire by the sea or to the countryside, away from the hustle and bustle.

“We are seeing more people downsizing and selling their homes in the busy home counties and London and moving down to the south west for a slower pace of life.

“Renting is ideal for people planning a big move to a new area as it provides the opportunity to make sure they like living there without making a huge financial investment.

“It also avoids costs like stamp duty and makes it easy to move again should it not work out.

“Renting in a purpose-built retirement development also allows people to enjoy retirement living without the worry of on going maintenance or payment of service charges.

“Most of our properties come with assured (lifetime) tenancies so people can stay as long as they wish offering them similar security to home ownership.”
