McCarthy Stone is pioneering a ground-breaking new way of building which will help make homes greener and more affordable.

“It’s a transformative time for the industry and we are delighted to be at the forefront,” declares John Tonkiss, CEO of McCarthy Stone.

“Our ways of building in the UK have been far to slow to change to modern methods of construction (MMC),” he adds.

“The government has woken up to this recently and successive housing ministers are championing the role of MMC.”

Indeed, the Housing Minister, Chris Pincher MP, backs MMC, urging Britain to become a global leader in this game-changing innovation – and McCarthy Stone is among those blazing a trail.

MMC offer more sustainable, eco-friendly and efficient ways of building than traditional constructions methods.

They speed up the time it takes to complete a project and produces high-quality homes.

McCarthy Stone’s first MMC project is a four-storey retirement development for the over 60s in Hexham, Northumberland, (pictured above) comprising 23 one-bedroom and 20 two-bedroom apartments.

“It will take us three months less time to build compared to using traditional building methods,” Mr Tonkiss explains.

“Costs are the same at the moment, but this way of building will benefit house buyers in time as we will start to improve and reduce costs.”

Hewson Court in Hexham was built using an innovative light-gauge steel frame supplied by McCarthy Stone’s Leeds-based partner Sigmat.

One of many benefits is that the frame is built off-site, helping with efficiency and productivity.

Also a high proportion of the materials used are recycled.

The frame also improves energy efficiency in the finished development, which could result in lower energy bills for homeowners*.

Hewson Court retirement apartments are now available to buy off plan, with completion expected later this year.

There will also be communal areas and gardens, with several apartments offering Juliet balconies or patios. Explore Hewson Court.
