Being interviewed on live TV – that’s another thing off the bucket list!

When retired teacher Sandra Falconer, 75, first heard about The Joy Club – an online activity club for retirees – she never expected that within a year of signing up, she would be appearing on national television to talk about her experiences as a member.

Sandra’s journey started when she took up the offer of a one-month free trial last year.

“I was feeling a bit down with lockdown so I looked into it,” she explained.

“I tend to be cautious about giving bank details to online advertisers so the free one-month trial was a massive incentive and I decided to give it a go.”

Over the next few months, Sandra, a divorced mum of six from Middlesborough, found that the Club helped to broaden her interests.

Having been initially drawn to the weekly creative writing class and the art classes which are held fortnightly, Sandra also tried yoga and is now interested in having a go at Tai Chi.

“The classes give me something to look forward to and bring structure to my week,” she says. “I feel that I’m learning things, which I love.

“Importantly, I’ve made friends with people I’d never have met under other circumstances.

“I’ve been able to meet people from all over the country.

“I have made so many online friends through the club that there is always someone I know in a new class or group. There’s a real community feeling.”

In December, Sandra even appeared on Sky News with The Joy Club’s founder and CEO, Hannah Thomson.

They were invited to talk about how the Club is inspiring people to try new activities and make new connections after they retire.

“I was a little nervous,” says Sandra who also enjoys other online classes such as Nutrition with Valentina and an Introduction to blogging.

“I had done radio interviews before – and have even read my poetry on the BBC – but at the end of the day, you’ve got to feel the fear and do it anyway – that’s my philosophy.”

Reflecting on her TV appearance, Sandra believes that it has helped her to feel more confident.

“I’m the sort of person who needs to have a little worry before I do something.

“It wasn’t as bad as I’d feared. In fact, I like to think that this might have given something to other people.”

The Joy Club runs a wide variety of classes and activities including Pilates, aerobics, mindfulness, belly dancing, as well as offering talks from experts and music recitals.

Membership is just £5 a month. All classes are live but a recording is released each Saturday for members to watch again at leisure.
