As the days grow longer and the chill of winter begins to fade, spring offers a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with the outdoors

Spring is a season of renewal and rejuvenation.

The natural world awakens from its winter slumber, bringing with it a burst of colour, scents, and sounds.

This transformation provides a perfect backdrop for getting back outside and reaping the numerous benefits that nature has to offer.

At Riverstone, the later living provider which is redefining living in London for over 65s, this spring heralds the start of a new series of organised walks for residents from both its Kensington and Fulham communities.

Explore the beauty of Holland Park

Riverstone is arranging free vehicle transport for residents to the start of the walk at Holland Park, the leafy 54-acre expanse which used to be the grounds of Cope Castle.

The walk itself will then start from the Abbotsbury Rd entrance where residents will then head past the ecology centre and enjoy the greenery of the perimeter walking path, before taking in Holland House and both the Dutch Garden and Napoleon Garden.

The walk culminates in the beautiful Kyoto Garden, an oasis of calm where residents can spend time enjoying the water and the beauty of the greenery.

This includes a tiered waterfall, stone lanterns, cherry & maple trees and of course a large pond.

Riverstone will be running two different groups – one for those who would like to enjoy the gardens at a leisurely pace, and those that would like to work up a bit of a sweat.

The benefits

In addition to the physical benefits that come with this increased outdoor activity, including improved cardiovascular health and increased vitamin D levels, homeowners can also reap the wider benefits associated with spending time in green and blue zones.

Dr Zoe Wyrko, wellbeing director at Riverstone, explains,

“Green zones, such as parks, gardens, and woodland, are rich in vegetation and offer a calming environment.

“These areas are known to reduce stress, improve mood, and enhance overall mental wellbeing.

“The sight of greenery can have a profound impact on our psychological state, promoting relaxation and reducing anxiety.

“Blue zones, which include bodies of water like rivers, lakes, and ponds also play a crucial role in our wellbeing.

“The soothing presence of water has been shown to lower blood pressure, decrease stress levels, and improve cognitive function. Whether it’s a gentle stroll along the riverbank or simply sitting by a pond, the tranquility of blue zones can provide peaceful repose that helps us recharge.”

Spending time outdoors is also an excellent way to foster social connections, which is proven to improve mental health and cognitive function.

For Riverstone residents, this is an excellent opportunity to strengthen bonds with neighbours and make new friends.

In conclusion, spring is a season that invites us to step outside and embrace the beauty of nature.

Green and blue zones offer a sanctuary for both mind and body, while the opportunity to connect with others enhances our sense of community.

Wellbeing is central to the ethos of life at Riverstone, with the company having invested heavily in specialist talent, creating a team who are passionate about “adding life to your years” for residents.

And when the weather is not so springlike Riverstone has wonderful spa and fitness facilities recreating that wellbeing boost indoors.

In addition to its current Kensington and Fulham communities, which have proved extremely popular since launching in 2022, Riverstone is also currently developing Riverstone Bishops Avenue.

This new 93-apartment community is set amongst ancient woodland a stone’s throw from Hampstead Heath, ensuring that residents will be perfectly placed for local walks when the development launches early next year.
