L-R Castle View apartment owners Janet Pickin, John Webster and Marie Broom get in the mood for Wimbledon, on John’s balcony overlooking the Windsor Lawn Tennis Club

With televisions tuned into Centre Court and Pimm’s, strawberries and cream at the ready, homeowners at Castle View retirement village in Windsor are ready for a smashing fortnight

Adding to the atmosphere, many of the residents will also be watching players competing at the Windsor Lawn Tennis Club next door and taking part.

Janet Pickin, 86, moved to Castle View last year and has played tennis for fun and fitness throughout her life.

She has recently joined the tennis club after taking a break for a few years.

“It’s great to be back on court and playing again,” she says.

”I’m loving it; it’s so convenient and literally a matter of yards from my front door!”

John Webster and his wife, Margaret, both 88, were keen tennis players too and their whole family are big fans, which is why they chose an apartment overlooking the courts.

“We can spend hours on our balcony watching the matches and coaching.

“The sound of a racquet hitting a tennis ball is a wonderful backdrop to our life here.”

While they prefer to play table tennis these days, Margaret took up tennis at school and played in competitions throughout Berkshire and in America when they lived there.

John didn’t play until he met Margaret.

She gave him the incentive when she declared, ‘you can only go out with me if you play tennis!’.

Marie Broom, 81,  moved to Castle View in February 2019 and enjoys watching the game, while her son Mark Player, who is chairman of the Windsor Lawn Tennis Club, takes it more seriously.

There are seven apartments at Castle View where the balconies overlook the tennis club, and a further 15 which have partial views.

Castle View Windsor is a new generation retirement village where the emphasis is on living rather than retirement.
