Making that exciting decision to move to a retirement village should be a lifestyle choice in which the property element is just one part

If you are seeking an enhanced quality of life with a range of superb facilities and services at your fingertips this will be the perfect move for you.

Life in a retirement village is about maintaining your independence by having access to a range of first class services. For example, transport, gardening and maintenance, cleaning, laundry and personal care.

It’s about social life; being part of a socially-active community with easy access to a range of stimulating activities, events and wonderful facilities such as a pool, spa and fitness studio.

It’s also about security; being secure and feeling secure, both in terms of personal safety and reassurance that help is close at hand if you need it.

Finally it’s about the property; a bright, modern home that’s fit for purpose both now and into the future, and somewhere that’s aspirational.

The award-winning retirement village operator, Richmond Villages, which is part of the healthcare group Bupa, ticks all of these boxes.

Commented Head of Marketing, David Reaves: “In terms of the property, generally our customers are downsizing, but not in terms of the size of rooms, just the number of them.  People are often moving from large family homes with four, five or more bedrooms and large gardens. They simply don’t need lots of bedrooms any more but large living spaces instead.”

Our buyers want homes that are right for them now and into the future

It may have been some time since many people last updated their kitchen and bathrooms so it’s an exciting prospect to move to a home with all the latest designs, materials and technology.

“Our customers are very practical and forward thinking,” continued David. “They want to be sure that the home they buy is right for them now and into the future. Level access into the property is important, as it is into the shower, to avoid complications should they have or develop mobility issues.  Similarly, wide doorways are important and in the kitchen features such as eye-level ovens and fridges equally so. A dishwasher is also a must for many, but with the capacity for half loads so that it can be used economically.”

Choice of materials and fittings is critical

One very popular feature Richmond Villages has designed following customer feedback is laundry closets. These are situated in the hallway and house washing machines and tumble dryers with counter space and shelving above for airing and storing bedding and towels. This not only takes the noisy white goods out of the kitchen, it also means that there is more cupboard and storage space.

The choice of materials and fittings is critical. Richmond Villages provides best quality finishes such as solid granite worktops in the kitchen and Corian in the bath and shower rooms, both of which not only look great, but are extremely durable.

Energy efficiency

Technology is constantly delivering improvements in terms of energy efficiency and this is important in terms of cost and green considerations. Richmond Villages is constantly looking at ways to raise the bar in terms of energy efficiency.

Now every bit as good as traditional lighting in terms of intensity and tone, LED fittings can last a decade and at the same time operate at a fraction of the energy usage, so offering big savings as well as reducing how often you need to change light bulbs,” explained David.

Homes with kerb appeal

If you look at the demand for the Richmond Village product, then it certainly seems as though it is producing what customers require.  There are two new retirement villages under construction; Richmond Witney, Oxfordshire (www.richmond-villages.com/witney) and Richmond Aston-on-Trent, South Derbyshire (www.richmond-villages.com/aston).
